Statement of commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Nous Group recognises and acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s continued connection to land and sea as the First Peoples of Australia.

Nous Group is committed to working with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities to support them to achieve their goals. We will listen, we will learn, and we will share in the challenge of elevating the voice, rights and outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We will draw on our wide range of expertise to advance the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through our work. We do this because our work gives us opportunities to make a positive difference and we have a moral responsibility to use those opportunities for maximum benefit. Our commitment will be demonstrated through:

Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples:

Acknowledging and respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s lived experience and expertise needs to inform all our project work, in particular work that impacts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Actively seeking to attract, recruit and employ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across all roles. Nous will strive to create and sustain a work environment in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff feel empowered to be their best selves and add unique value through their individual capabilities and lived experiences.

Ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff have access to a range of opportunities to develop their skills and interests in their chosen fields. We will ensure they have opportunities to work across a wide range of projects and roles.

Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owned companies:

Nous recognises and acknowledges that project work that involves Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities should be led and/or guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Nous will seek opportunities to partner with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owned companies to lead and deliver work that impacts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. In partnering we listen, learn and collaborate to achieve stronger outcomes that advance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander interests. When we are invited, we will create opportunities to share our consulting skills and knowledge with our partner organisations and individuals to encourage shared growth.

These partnerships can take a range of forms – sometimes our companies will walk side by side, sometimes we will work on a project led by an Indigenous-owned company, and sometimes projects will be led by Nous. We work with our partners to determine the right arrangement for each project.

Building our competence so we can achieve better outcomes with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities:

We acknowledge that we are on a journey towards building cultural competence. We want to make sure we become better at what we do and work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities sensitively, respectfully and skillfully. This will involve focussed efforts to develop our cultural capability.

It is important that all Nous staff recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander interests and impacts in all project work and where appropriate be skilled in engaging with and understanding the broader context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues. To do this we commit to develop and deliver a professional development program that builds the cultural competence of our staff to work respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and communities.

With this statement guiding our actions, Nous looks forward to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities to make a positive impact.
