Hugh draws on his experience in education and law to bring a creative and evidence-based approach to analysis and problem solving.
He has worked across private, government and not-for-profit sectors in Australia and abroad. He is keenly client-focused and uses his strong research and communication skills to gather key information and deliver practical solutions.

Influential work

  • Appeared as counsel in complex family law, child protection and criminal property forfeiture proceedings; and often represented vulnerable clients and clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including First Nations clients
  • Provided detailed written advice on a wide array of legal matters, including construction and major projects; bio-security compliance; and Australian consumer law
  • Designed and delivered community legal education programs in relation to domestic violence, child protection and family law
  • Collaborated with local and foreign teaching staff at a bilingual school in China to create a curriculum and lesson plans for an ESL course
  • Designed an educational program and supporting grant application for an Indonesian anti-corruption NGO.

Outside of Nous

Prior to joining Nous, Hugh worked as a lawyer for the NT Legal Aid Commission, Maleys Barristers and Solicitors, and the Department of Attorney-General and Justice (NT). He has extensive experience in litigation and dispute resolution processes, as well as working with vulnerable clients. He has worked closely with social support organisations to ensure a holistic approach to service delivery for clients experiencing various forms of disadvantage.

Hugh also worked as a teacher in China for over three years, based primarily in Shanghai; and interned with Transparency International Indonesia, in Jakarta. He holds a Bachelor of Laws and Development Studies from the University of Adelaide and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University.

In his spare time...

Hugh enjoys fitness and yoga, as well as attempting new cuisines in the kitchen. He is an avid amateur actor and has appeared in local productions in Darwin.
