Webinar: How Australian universities are adapting to a global crisis

SHARE ARTICLE

Australia was quick to close its borders due to Covid-19, and has now set out its road to recovery, with social restrictions being eased and a clear 3-stage plan in place for gradual reopening of the economy. So what can the UK higher education sector learn from the way Australia is responding to Covid-19?

In partnership with Universities UK International (UUki), Nous is hosting a webinar to share insights into the Australian higher education sector’s response to Covid-19. The webinar will explore:

  • Institutional perspectives on managing the crisis – featuring insight from Professor Paul Wellings CBE, Vice Chancellor, Wollongong University and Dr Michael Spence AC, Vice Chancellor and Principal, Sydney University
  • Insights into the Australian government’s response – delivered by Sydney based Nous Principal Libby Hackett.

When Covid-19 struck in Australia, it coincided with the start of the academic year, meaning quick decisions had to be made. This webinar is a chance for UK institutions to hear and ask questions about Australian strategies for recovery, from adapting methods of teaching and shifting start dates to re-balancing funding and refocusing priorities. We’ll discuss approaches taken by Australian institutions, as well as measures introduced by the government, including:

  • Hardship packages for international students announced by State governments
  • Negotiations that are in place with national unions around working conditions
  • The increase in face-to-face learning at universities that is included in the first phase of reopening
  • The suggestion that international students could be among the first to be exempt from the travel ban in the third phase
  • The introduction of government-supported short courses to support those going back into employment.
