We are pleased to announce the appointment of three new Principals to our Canberra office.

Phil Kowalick brings insights from more than 30 years in the Australian Federal Police, Maria Jolly brings a decade of experience as a First Assistant Secretary across several Australian Government departments, and Dan McDaniel brings his expertise as a senior military leader who led Australia’s special forces.

Dr Phil Kowalick is one of Australia’s foremost thinkers in law enforcement, intelligence and national security. An AFP officer for 34 years, Phil established multi-agency intelligence capabilities in Australia’s major airports, established the law enforcement presence in the Counter Terrorism Control Centre, and contributed to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Model and Strategy. Phil is President of the Australian Institute of Professional Intelligence Officers (AIPIO), Chair of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) School of Justice Advisory Board, an Adjunct Professor at QUT, and Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the University of New England.

“I am pleased to draw on my expertise and experience to support organisations that are keeping Australians safe,” Phil said. “As the nature of our national security challenges evolve, it will be more important than ever that organisations have the right strategy and operating model. I look forward to working with Nous clients to meet the moment.”

Maria Jolly has worked in government and non-government roles for 28 years, including a decade as a First Assistant Secretary across the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Aged Care, and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. She brings recent experience in leading First Nations’ policy design, health and education policy and programs.

“I relish the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders to improve education, health and wellbeing,” Maria said. “In my work in policy and program design in the public sector, I have sought to enable practical, implementable, equitable and culturally sensitive solutions. I am pleased to support Nous public sector clients with these big challenges.”

Dan McDaniel DSC AM DSM is an experienced former military leader who has had senior roles in the Australian and US Defence systems. Dan was an officer in the Australian Army for 34 years. He worked extensively in the business of Defence, leading the renewal of the department’s Contestability Division, responsible for the critical analysis of Defence’s most complex capability programs. In his last military role, Dan was seconded to the United States Army as the Deputy Commander of their Pacific Army.

“I look forward to supporting national security and Defence organisations with strategy and leadership development, change management and critical analysis of complex programs,” Dan said. “When in Defence I was passionate about doing great things for Australia, its partners and interests, and I bring that same drive to Nous.”

Tim Orton, the CEO and Managing Principal of Nous Group, said the appointments of Phil, Maria and Dan would give Nous clients across government and Defence the benefits of their extensive experience.

“We are thrilled to welcome Phil, Maria and Dan to Nous. They have all built formidable careers in public service, and we are pleased they are coming to Nous for their next challenge.

“At a time when Australian Government clients are being more discerning in their use of consultants, we are confident that accessing the expertise of these three represents a wise investment for clients that will deliver a substantial return in the form of improved performance.”

“Phil, Maria and Dan will be great additions to our fantastic Canberra office, led by Andrew Benoy.”
