Ian has 30 years’ experience in Australian health care, working at Federal and State Government levels, in operational management and has a consultant.
His expertise includes national level strategy and policy development, health system data and financing, operational service and performance improvement, evaluation and implementation. His experience working with clients at Federal and State through to local levels enables him to translate perspectives and priorities into solutions that align policy and strategy with on the ground realities and pressures.

Influential work

  • Participated in federal, state and territory negotiations National Health Reform Agreements and other major national programs
  • Managed a major tertiary hospital and associated community and mental health services
  • Designed a new national early intervention service for people seeking assistance for mental health problems
  • Drew together data from diverse sources to assess the health and aged care funding differences between urban and rural areas
  • Identified practical solutions to address health workforce shortages in northern Queensland
  • Evaluated a national program to improve access to palliative care services for people living in residential aged care
  • Worked with multiple aged care providers to prepare for the introduction of the new national Support at Home program for home based aged care 

Outside of Nous

Before joining Nous, Ian was Deputy director general of ACT Health  , responsible for leading and managing Canberra Hospital and associated community health and mental health services.  Prior to that, he performed senior roles in ACT Health and the Australian Department of Health.  He also sat on the Research Advisory Board of the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute. 

Ian holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the Australian National University. 

In his spare time...

Ian enjoys spending time with his family.  He is a keen bushwalker skier and a frequent gym attendee, and likes to relax by reading and solving cryptic crosswords.
